Filing Tax Returns in the Czech Republic Through a Tax Adviser

The tax filing season is now in full swing in the Czech Republic. If you were planning to submit your tax return on paper, that deadline has already passed — the cutoff was April 1, 2026. But do not panic. Those who missed it, as well as business owners with a data box, can still file online. For electronic filing through the MOJE daně portal or via the same data box, the law grants an extra full month. In 2026, that deadline falls on May 4.

But what if you do not have enough time to gather your documents, or the amount of tax due came as an unpleasant surprise? You have a legal backup option. Czech law clearly states that if your return is filed by a licensed tax adviser (daňový poradce), the deadline is automatically extended to July 1, 2026.

In reality, however, working with a specialist is not just about gaining a few extra months on the calendar. In this article, we will explain how the system of filing tax returns through licensed advisers works and why it is often more beneficial than trying to figure everything out on your own.

Filing deadlines

Let us start with the main advantage of working with a tax adviser — a lawful extension of the filing deadline. Under the Czech Tax Code (§ 136 odst. 2 písm. b), if the return is filed by an adviser, the deadline is extended to 6 months after the end of the tax period.

As mentioned above, in 2026 this means July 1.

This gives you a real head start. There is no need to rush around looking for receipts or trying to recover lost invoices. The adviser will either work through everything with you or handle the process independently, checking every figure along the way.

The deadline for paying the tax itself is also moved together with the filing deadline (§ 135 odst. 3). In other words, you can pay the state three months later. For businesses, this is an excellent opportunity to keep funds in circulation for longer.

Important. There is, however, one exception. If you only need to submit a notification of tax-exempt income (for example, if you received an inheritance or a gift exceeding CZK 5 million), this must be filed strictly by April 1. This type of notification is not covered by the adviser extension. However, if the tax return itself is filed through a tax adviser, the deadline for the notification is extended together with the filing deadline, and the notification can be submitted along with the return within the extended period.

You get more than just a tax return — you get a professional tax approach

Working with a tax adviser is not only about submitting your return on time. It is also an opportunity to verify that everything has been accounted for correctly and that you are not paying more tax than you are legally required to pay.

Many people see tax optimization as something questionable. In practice, it means something entirely different: making proper use of the rules, expenses, reliefs and deductions provided by law. A tax adviser helps identify these opportunities and apply them correctly.

For business owners, this primarily means proper treatment of expenses and the right choice of tax regime. In practice, it often turns out that some costs were not taken into account at all, or were treated in a way that was not the most beneficial. As a result, the tax base ends up higher than it should be.

For individuals, the key issues are different: property sales, mortgages, investment income, foreign-source income, tax-exempt income, deductions and reporting obligations. In many cases, a consultation helps not only to avoid mistakes, but also to reduce the overall tax burden or recover an overpayment.

That is why filing through a tax adviser is not simply about delegating paperwork. It is a way to approach your taxes professionally, calmly and with the confidence that you are making full use of every lawful option available in your situation.

Who is a licensed tax adviser (daňový poradce)

A tax adviser is not just someone who understands bookkeeping and tax rules well. The profession of tax advisers in the Czech Republic is strictly regulated by a special law (No. 523/1992 Coll.) on Tax Advisory Services and the Chamber of Tax Advisers of the Czech Republic (Zákon o daňovém poradenství a Komoře daňových poradců České republiky). Under this law, the status of a tax adviser is not merely a job title — it is a state-protected professional designation.

To obtain this status, a specialist must pass a serious selection process.

First, they must pass state examinations. These exams test knowledge not only of tax law, but also of civil, commercial and labor law.

Second, the adviser must be a member of the Chamber of Tax Advisers (KDP ČR). Every specialist has their own registration number. You can always visit the official Chamber website and check whether the person you are dealing with is in fact a licensed tax adviser.

There is one more important point — professional confidentiality. By law, a tax adviser is required to keep your information confidential. This obligation is in many ways comparable to attorney-client privilege. Even the police or the tax authorities cannot simply force an adviser to disclose your confidential information. For businesses, this provides an additional layer of legal protection.

Insurance against penalties for errors in tax filings

Czech laws are constantly changing. Keeping up with every amendment on your own is difficult. If you make a mistake in your calculations yourself, you will also be the one paying the fines and late-payment interest.

With an adviser, things work differently. By law, every tax adviser registered with the Chamber of Tax Advisers of the Czech Republic (KDP ČR) is required to carry professional liability insurance. This means that if you are penalized because of the adviser’s mistake, the loss will be covered not by you, but by the insurance company or the adviser personally.

In addition, the adviser officially becomes your shield in dealings with the tax office. If the inspectors have questions or an audit begins, a professional will handle the communication. You will not have to waste your nerves on bureaucratic correspondence.

How does filing through a tax adviser work?

You do not need to get lost in complicated terminology. The whole process usually comes down to four simple steps.

  1. Signing a power of attorney (plná moc). This document authorizes the specialist to represent your interests before the tax office (Finanční úřad). With a power of attorney, the adviser can lawfully file tax returns on your behalf, sign documents and respond to official requests from tax inspectors.
  2. Registering the power of attorney. There is no need to notify the tax office separately in advance about the power of attorney in order to obtain the extended filing deadline. The extension applies if the tax return is filed by a tax adviser (daňový poradce) acting as the taxpayer’s representative. The tax office confirms this based on the filing itself and the attached power of attorney.
  3. Collecting documents. For individuals, you provide the documents needed to prepare the return: income statements, bank statements, mortgage documents, investment records, property sale documents and other supporting paperwork. For companies, the tax adviser usually works with data from the current bookkeeping records and reviews the tax side of the reporting. If necessary, additional documents and explanations may be requested.
  4. Review and submission. The tax adviser analyzes the information provided, checks the accuracy of the calculations, assesses any lawful tax reliefs and deductions that may apply, prepares the return and submits it to the tax authority in the proper manner.

Important. To receive the extension until July, the return must be physically submitted by the licensed adviser. If you simply sign an engagement agreement but send the return yourself, the extended deadline will not apply.

Who needs a tax adviser?

A tax adviser is needed by people for whom not only the filing deadline matters, but also the correct tax outcome. Above all, this applies to those whose tax situation goes beyond one salary and a standard return.

People who usually turn to a tax adviser include:

· entrepreneurs and business owners;

· people with multiple sources of income;

· investors dealing with securities, funds or cryptocurrency;

· those receiving income from abroad;

· property owners selling real estate or planning to use tax reliefs;

· clients who want to reduce the risk of mistakes and avoid overpaying tax;

· those who want to lawfully gain more time to file a return and pay their tax.

A tax adviser is neither a luxury nor a mere formality. It is professional support in situations where a mistake may cost more than the consultation itself.

Key takeaways

Let us briefly sum up the main points above.

● When filing through an adviser, the tax return deadline in 2026 is July 1. That gives you 3 additional months to prepare your filing.

● Later tax payment deadline. The tax must also be paid by July 1. This allows businesses to keep money in circulation for longer.

● A tax adviser (daňový poradce) is a state-licensed professional working under Law No. 523/1992 Coll. and registered with the Chamber. This status guarantees professional confidentiality and a high level of qualification.

● The adviser’s work is insured. If a penalty arises because of their mistake, it is paid by the adviser’s insurance company.

● Tax optimization. A specialist will not only prepare the return, but also help identify lawful ways to reduce the amount of tax due through proper handling of expenses and deductions.

● Important limitation. A notification of income exceeding CZK 5 million, such as an inheritance, must be filed by April 1 if it is not submitted together with the tax return. This deadline cannot be extended through an adviser.
